Almost 4 months ago we closed on our new house. After a few weeks of constant work, we got to a point where we felt we could move in, aka live in a renovation zone! While I feel like the progress has been slow, it really hasn’t when you consider IronFish works full time and since the kids are back in school, I’m back to my part time job and building my Skin Care business all while continuing to work on the house.
The kids started asking about 6 weeks in when we would be done….. are you kidding me? Um, maybe by the time you go to college!?!?!?!
That’s when I started referring to our renovation as a triathlon, something the kids have become great spectators of!
Phase 1 – aka The Swim!
This is the initial part of the plan, lots of little things to get the main part of the house looking the way we want it. Everything but the kitchen and bathroom basically! Here’s the layout of the house:
We are using the family room as an Office/Den, someplace IronFish can work from home in when he needs to, but also as another place to hang out and watch TV. I suggested built ins for storage and to give it a library feel. He took the idea and designed exactly what he wanted. So far, it’s the room that has taken the most amount of work, but it’s coming along nicely.
O-Man is on the first floor next to our bedroom and the craft/guest room. Considering he hasn’t slept in a room by himself since he was in a crib, and he doesn’t like to be on a floor without someone else, it was the right place to put him. Plus, there is plenty of room for all of his toys in there. O wants a Mine Craft room, including a mural and sky on the ceiling. We are making some compromises since I want it to be a room he can grow up in, not change in another year or two, especially since I’m not getting to painting a mural anytime soon!
The craft room was originally going to get a full size bed for when we have guests, but we inherited a queen size bed which we ended up putting in O-Man’s room and put his twin bed into the guest room. This room will probably be a disaster for a long time, but O ends up sleeping in there when we have company and our guests sleep in his room. I am hoping to be able to sew in there soon, so it will probably get cleaned up enough for me to do that and then made into a new disaster!
The master bedroom, hallway, dining room, living room have all gotten a fresh coat of paint. Hopefully we will get a coat of paint on the walls in the bathrooms and kitchen before Christmas since they aren’t a part of “The Swim.”
Upstairs the girls each have their own room and they share a small bathroom and “office.” Their office is the landing space at the top of the stairs, it fits their small desks and chairs nicely, along with a little bookcase.
We totally lucked out in the basement department….. it’s a full basement! Where it says crawl space, we have the optional basement! It’s huge! And before we put anything down there, I rented a paint sprayer and sprayed the rafters which opened it up and made the ceilings feel taller than they are. We also opted to put the washer and dryer down there (we had 2 hook ups) and are using the original laundry room, off of the kitchen, as a mudroom.
Aside from paint, the main goals of “the swim” are getting the floors done (refinished, new laid, etc), electric updated and a cohesive style to the house overall… Oh, did I forget to mention, the house came with 4 styles of doors, 4 styles of knobs and 11 styles of trim!!!!! And everything was 1980’s brass!!!!
Phase 2 – aka The Bike and Phase 3 – aka the Run!
We are a bit up in the air as to what exactly is a part of this portion of our home reno triathlon. In my mind, this was the kitchen and phase 3 is all the bathrooms… then IronFish mentioned a sunroom and patio on the back, so maybe bathrooms go with the kitchen or maybe they are a part of the backyard?
Either way, we are in this house for the long haul, this is the house we plan on staying in. We already love it, feel so at home (despite the constant state of construction) and can see how it will look when we are all done! The race will be long, but we plan on celebrating each portion and enjoying all of it!
