I’m still trying to grasp my head around the kids being back in school and getting on a school year schedule. The mantle was recently cleared off of Easter other seasonal decor. Ready to start decorating for the fall, I realized I wasn’t as enthusiastic about my existing fall decorating pieces. Every store I go into has these awesome teal or aqua shades of fall decorations! Completely non-traditional but totally my colors! Since I try not to spend tons on decorations I’m only going to use for a few months once a year, it was time to hit up the dollar store. With a jar of chalk paint and some foam pumpkins, it didn’t take long to make them the perfect shade for my house. I’m all over the teal pumpkins this fall.
Teal Pumpkins
This is really a super quick before and after. A jar of “agave” chalk paint, a brush and a few minutes are all it takes to turn cheap pumpkins into a color perfect for my house. If teal isn’t your color, grab a jar of chalk paint that is perfect for your home!
Here’s the before:

Straight from the store, the concept of the burlap pumpkin is cute, but the white styrofoam is visible through. This makes it look like something straight from the dollar store.
But, after a bit of chalk paint…

So much better! The paint not only fills in but hardens the burlap so it doesn’t shift around. Of course, once I uploaded this picture I realized there is a spot or two I need to put a second coat of paint on. Just to make sure the original burlap color doesn’t show.
And, side by side:

Told you this was a quick before and after! I love that it only took a few minutes and a $1.00 pumpkin. I actually love burlap, but these pumpkins just looked a bit too flimsy they way they came. Aside from being super quick, cheap, and easy… the texture of the burlap is still there!
So, what color would you paint pumpkins for your fall decor?

Here are some other easy fall projects using paint to create trendy pumpkins… but you can use whatever color you want!

Wow! That was an easy update. It’s so cute & the teal color is so pretty! I’ll have to see if the dollar store has these pumpkins left.
I’m thinking of getting more! It was too easy, felt like kind of a cop-out for a project, lol
I am always amazed at what a little chalk paint can do. I find dollar store decor tacky, but you made it look great, it doesn’t look dollar store at all now because the quality is fixed. Brilliant easy idea.
I too think straight from the dollar store can look tacky, but it’s always fun to make something out of stuff from there!
Perfect upgrade to the Dollar Store Store Pumpkin! The color choice is so trendy and who doesn’t love a quick and easy project like this! Pinning to share.
I love that you can customize the pumpkin with the color of your choice, I’ve been wanting to do something like this for my mom’s house. Thanks for the how to!
I love all these new fall colors! And I had to laugh because I never put any decorations back up after I cleared my Easter stuff so my shelves have been bare!
A little paint goes a long way with dollar store items I love using non traditional fall colors, too. Your painted pumpkin looks great. Pinning.
Wow, that does look so much better. I would have not even picked those up, but the paint made them look totally different. Great idea and tip.
My fall colors seem to be navy and a pale green this year. I love the idea of using $1 store pumpkins for this as I too am not a fan of spending lots of money on something that isn’t going to be out/used for very long. Pinned.
I need to visit my dollar store – I love the quick and easy color change you gave the pumpkin! Great idea! #HomeMattersParty
Dollar Store crafts are the best! I need to visit my local store soon before they run out of pumpkins. Great project and I know you will enjoy the updated colors. #HomeMattersParty
What a perfect way to make fall decor match your home. So simple and classy!
