It’s the fourth and final week of the Drawer Organization Challenge! For the entire month of April, several bloggers will be sharing the process of cleaning and organizing drawers around our homes each week. This week is all about bedroom drawers. We all start and end our days in our bedrooms. I strive to have a tranquil bedroom… ok, I dream of having one but it’s always the last room I put my effort into!

Bedroom Drawers
When we first bought our new house, I tried to start with it organized. Our old house had a slightly larger walk-in closet than the new one, plus a second large reach-in closet. Those closets were rearranged several times. But, because of the closet space, we didn’t have or need dressers.
Our closet was organized before we even moved into the house fully this time around. We’ve managed to maintain the neat clean look in the closet ever since. We each also have a dresser. My dresser drawers aren’t super neat, but they are organized enough for what is kept in them.
My nightstand on the other hand….
IronFish has a dresser with a matching nightstand. My dresser used to be at our cottage but we found one that fit that space better. So, I got to bring the dresser I refinished home. My goal was to have my nightstand coordinate with my dresser.
This hand-me-down dresser was tall enough and begging for a make-over, so it landed next to my bed.
It didn’t take long to realize while I had ideas for how to refinish it… it just wasn’t going to function the way I wanted it to.
The drawers are too hard to slide in and out unless you use two hands and are directly in front of it. I can’t open the drawers from my bed. The bottom two drawers I don’t really need to open from my bed, but the top one I do.
So, everything gets left on top or on the floor in front of it.
It’s gotten pretty bad… I can see way too many dust bunnies!
New Nightstand
I found the perfect solution… a Rast dresser from Ikea. It’s unfinished, so it’s a blank canvas. Plus, it was 15% off when I got it… 8 months ago!
Yes, it’s still in the box.
When I started this challenge, I had high hopes of including my newly finished Ikea Rast Hack in this post.
By January 87th, I knew it wasn’t going to happen. We are just now starting to get spring weather. My attempt at getting the dresser started in the garage this weekend was quickly overrun by IronFish’s desire to get started on the yard.
Plus, I’ve barely been home for more than eating and sleeping lately!
I’ve spent a lot more time waiting for the kids, away from home. Yarn is always in my bag and a project is constantly filling that waiting time. But, I’m also trying to do more planning and prep work when I’m away from home.
With the measurements and a list of what I knew I wanted in my nightstand, I sketched out a few ideas and landed on a plan for when I finally get the dresser finished (fingers crossed it will be this weekend).
Thankfully, before I spent the time looking for drawer organizers to fit the drawer, I checked my stash in the basement. Much like my bathroom drawer organization project, I found what I needed there.
In just a few minutes I was able to get rid of everything that didn’t need to be in the old nightstand. Plus, found several gift cards and even cash! I knew I had stuck it all someplace when we first moved but forgot all about it.
By planning while away from home, I was able to gather my supplies and test everything out. I am pretty pleased with the “dry run” of my nightstand.
And, I did decide how I want to finish the nightstand also! Now, if I can just find the time to do the work…
