We kicked off the first week in the kitchen! This week we have been doing drawer organization in our Office, Craft, and Living Rooms. I’m excited to share the solution I came up with for my lack of craft drawer space when organizing my craft room.
My Sewing Space
Before we moved I was sewing frequently. My machine was set up and it was easy to use when I needed or wanted to. Once we had a closing date on the new house and I had a color scheme, I found several fabrics at a discount upholstery fabric store. If I even remotely thought I would use it, I bought it.
My list of things I wanted to sew for the new house was pretty long. Almost 3 years later and aside from reupholstering a chair, I haven’t sewn anything on that list.
Recently I started sewing a weighted blanket for my daughter. The reality of how unprepared my sewing space was crashed into me, making it really hard to finish the blanket.
But, I did. And decided I needed to do something about this space before making them for the other kids.
My craft room has all kinds of great built-ins that the previous owners left for me. The desk area is between the two built-ins, just below the window.
I’m 5’10″… The desk is too low for me. I hunch over the machine. But, it can’t be raised or it would block the window.
And there are no drawers as a part of the desk.
It ends up a cluttered mess. My first attempt at containing the sewing supplies was a clear plastic drawer unit.
It’s a great solution for the many foot pedals (I have 4 machines!). The middle drawer ended up some random craft supplies (but I still labeled it!). The top drawer was supposed to be the sewing supplies I like to have within reach while using the machine.
That didn’t work out too well. I end up piling stuff on the right side. Pins, needles, seam rippers, scissors, all mixed in with other random things for whatever reason.
And I’m constantly moving this drawer organizer from my previous sewing space around, hoping it doesn’t spill.
It also ends up with random things added to it.
So it’s got two strikes against it. Too low and no drawers.
Computer Monitor Platform = Craft Drawers!
I’m sure my phone is working in conjunction with Amazon to know everything I say, do, and even think!
Somehow, while looking for something completely different on Amazon, I saw drawer units meant to elevate a computer monitor and add storage.
I knew I had found a solution!
And thanks to Prime, it arrived quickly!
It only took me a few minutes to fill it up.
Here are the bottom 3 drawers. I have scissors all over the craft room and the whole house. But it’s always nice to have a pair within reach so I’ll store some reserved only for sewing here. A whole drawer is dedicated to machine needles and the Allen wrenches only one of the machines requires to change the needle!
In the back of the needle drawer is a magnetic pin holder for bent, broken or worn out needles. This way when I have a bunch I can dispose of them safely.
The upper right corner drawer is the perfect spot for my straight pins. I like to have little dishes or magnetic holders since I sometimes need to spread out a large project in the living room to pin. This way I can transport them.
But, since the drawers slide out easily, I may just use the drawer itself.
The left drawer is presser feet and the random tools that came with my various machines. I might end up looking for a way to divide this drawer eventually.
Seam rippers disappear and then later multiply. I probably have enough to fill the whole drawer when I track them all down! I used an old tin to corral hand sewing needles here also.
I’m not 100% sure the drawers will stay exactly this way. Inevitably I’ll probably rearrange in the middle of a big sewing project. But I’ll end up with the best results that way.
I also found this great self-adhesive drawer. I ordered one to check it out and decide where to use it and if I need more. The underside of my cutting table may be the perfect location for a few! Or the right side of my sewing desk…
Adding drawers where previously lacking was the perfect solution for my space and maybe for yours too! Of course, I already know they will all be emptied out so I can paint the unit white!
