Today’s theme for the 12 Days of Christmas is Christmas in a Jar! I remember years ago when I would make soup or cookie mix in a mason jar to give to friends and neighbors. A few years ago a friend gave me a jar of homemade fudge topped with a cute silicon jar topper instead of the traditional fabric. I love mason jars because they are so versatile. Instead of coming up with something to put into a jar, I decided to come up with a way to “wrap” the jar for gift giving with a crocheted mason jar cover.

It’s Day 8 and we are sharing Christmas In A Jar Ideas!
Crocheted Mason Jar Cover
In the midst of all these Christmas projects for blog posts, I’m trying to clean up my craft room and get it organized. The problem is, I can’t seem to get rid of enough because I can always come up with a project to do with the supplies I find!
So, when I have a project to work on, I dive into my existing supplies to find inspiration. And I’m so often on the go and yarn is always easy to bring with me!
If you already know how to crochet, then this should be pretty simple. One of my 2019 goals is to go back to many of the patterns I’ve created and write them more in-depth so people just learning to can follow them better.
With worsted weight yarn (4) and an appropriate hook start with either a magic circle or chain 4 and join into a loop. The main stitch used is the granite stitch (single crochet, chain one and skip a stitch… the next row the single crochet into the chain stitch from the previous row).
Row 1: In the ring, double crochet (DC) 15 times. Join together
Row 2: 2 DC in each stitch (30 stitches)
Row 3: Single crochet (SC) in the back loop (30)
Row 4: Start the granite stitch. SC in the first stitch and chain 1, skip the next stitch, single crochet in the following stitch. Continue this pattern to the beginning of your row, don’t join, just continue to work up the side of the jar shape (30 stitches)
Row 5+: Continuing to work in the round with the SC and chain 1 pattern. After row 4 the SC will always be in the space of the chain from the previous row.
Continue working for a total of 18 rows (more for a taller jar, mine holds about 2 cups, wide mouth). Change colors if you wish.
Now if you want to just purchase a ready-made gift in a jar, a crocheted mason jar cover makes it special. Looking for ideas to put in the jar? This ebook is full of ideas (and was free when I wrote this post, but I don’t know for how long).
