At this point, I think it’s pretty safe to say, everyone has heard of Pinterest. It’s probably also safe to say the majority of Pinterest users have pinned more projects and ideas than they will ever be able to finish in their lifetime… Please tell me I’m not the only one! It’s because of this addiction to pinning that gets me excited to participate in the monthly Pinterest Challenge. This month, I’m excited to share a crocheted sea turtle blanket I made for a friend from a pin she sent me.
Inspiration
One afternoon I got a message from a friend asking if it was possible for me to make a blanket like the one in the picture (this pin). She wanted to give it as a gift.
Not five minutes later, another friend sent me the same picture also asking if I could make the blanket for her to give as a gift!
I checked. They were not looking to give the same person the blanket!
I knew from looking at the picture I could create a similar blanket. The original image did not lead me to a pattern, but there are patterns available. Considering I knew I wanted to make a few changes, it wasn’t necessary for me to find a pattern to follow.
The first recipient of this crocheted sea turtle blanket was a baby. My friend wanted a baby blanket version. I also wanted to change the turtles as I had an idea for what I thought would make the turtle cuter.
Sea Turtle Blanket
Since we want the blanket to look like the waves are taking the turtles out to sea, I worked a ripple blanket from the top down. In other words, from the sea to the beach.
Fading the darker seafoam green into the lighter shade and then finally into the sandy color (yellow was used in the original picture).
The final blanket is about 3’x4′ in size.
Once the blanket was complete, I made the turtles. Starting with the darker green, I crocheted a 5 pointed granny square pattern. With the lighter green, I stitched in between with the same granny square stitches. Trimming the shell in dark green, I finished off with the head, legs, and tail in the lighter green, leaving a long enough yarn tail to sew the turtles to the blanket.
Finally, I finished off the blanket by trimming it in a crab stitch. I really love the way it turned out. The next one has to be a large afghan size!
Even though there are lots of patterns out there, I’m considering writing up my version when I make the next one. Should I?

Gorgeous and prettier than the inspiration blanket. I am curious as to how long this takes to do. You are so skilled with crochet. It’s beautiful and should become an heirloom.
I crochet fairly quickly so this took me a few dedicated days. I also had quite a few appointments with the kids where I spent some serious waiting room time crocheting!

Emily, I am absolutely positive that I have pinned the same inspirationa s you had. Love how your blanket turned out. I am crocheting a baby blanket at the Moment but not with a fancy pattern like yours, just some hearts in it.
Your project turned out lovely! The ripple stitch was my Nana’s favorite stitch to make afghans.I like the color palette. Good idea to adapt a granny square (pentagon?) to make the baby sea turtles. Of course, you should write up the pattern! I’m sure a lot of people would love it.
