January is flying by! As soon as the kids went back to school, O-Man’s bathroom was pulled down to studs. It’s my main project right now. But… not what I’m sharing today. That will come, I promise! Today, I’m sharing a quick Amazon Alexa Dot Holder project as a part of the UpCycle Challenge. Upcycled from a spare part from the bathroom renovation!
Metal, Glass, or Plastic
This was not my original project. Hopefully, I will be able to make that another time, but, two attempts resulted in broken glass and I decided to move on.
Without any idea as to what I was going to do for plan B!
Saturday I dove into preparing all kinds of meals, breakfasts, and snacks for the family. Stocking the fridge and freezer all while listening to an Audiobook.
Then, I started cleaning up the kitchen. IronFish took over when I sat down with the heating pad on my back and ended up sucked into The Haunting of Hill House with JuneBug. Part of my clean up plan involved getting a few cabinets and drawers better organized. While I tried to have them organized as soon as the kitchen was finished, some didn’t function as well for my family as they did for me.
And in that, I wanted to get the countertops cleaned up, which includes all the cords!
Amazon Alexa Dot Holder
A quick search showed me there were products out there I could purchase to hang my Alexa Dot near the outlet. But, even with Prime, I didn’t want to wait!
Then the light bulb went off! Instead of throwing in the towel and bowing out of the challenge, I realized I could make something to solve my problem. I dug into metal and plastic things I had laying around.
When I went to grab a tool from the under-construction bathroom, I knew I had exactly what I needed… a hose clamp! It’s metal, the right size and available.
This is an adjustable 3-4″ hose clamp. I also grabbed my white electrical tape.
Using a screwdriver, tighten the hose clamp towards the top of the Dot. Then I used a pair of pliers to bend the remaining metal strap upwards. I tried to cut a few of the slots out so I could hook them over the Command Hook, but that turned out to be more challenging than I expected. A piece of white yarn threaded through enabled hanging.
I don’t mind the black of the Alexa Dot, but the black wires still bothered me. So, I wrapped them in the white electrical tape.
I’m actually considering wrapping all the black electrical cords in my kitchen in white electrical tape now. It disappears against my white tile!
That’s it! I solved the problem and c0mpleted the challenge. A 3-4″ adjustable hose clamp probably isn’t something everyone has on hand, but it’s easy to pick one up for under $2 at a hardware store. Much less than the $10-20 I saw for products I could have ordered. Plus, I didn’t have to wait 2 days.
