Twelve years in our old house and I had pictures all over the walls. Five years in our new house and I only had photo walls on walls I was planning tearing down or completely redoing eventually. Now that all of the major renovations are done, it’s time to start adding artwork to some of my blank walls. I’ve been eyeing a particular spot for a large photo grid wall.

Blank Slate

With the last name Fish, I find fish decor things fun. So when a friend gave me this cute fish picture, in colors that work in my house, I hung it right away.

But, the room has completely evolved since I hung the fun fish painting. Months ago I found a bunch of unfinished frames on clearance.

A craft room destash challenge this month was the perfect push I needed.

Time to better fill this large blank slate.

Photo Grid Wall

I used a very light bleached oak stain and two coats of paste wax. The difference isn’t very noticeable in the picture, but I love the light finish.

Part of what has held me back in accomplishing this is my inability to select the right photos. But getting the frames hung, will force me fill them!

First I decided on my layout.

Using a scrap piece of wood enabled me to easily space the frames. I love that they are square but hold a standard 5×7 picture.

  1. This is very well done. It has a professional design look too. I love the way you think, "if you build it they will come." I need to do many things that way, start it in order to complete it!
  2. This wall looks great! I haven't changed the photos in my frames forever. I really need to do that. Great idea to use the block of wood and that was a great clearance find.
  3. I'm a complete geek about family photos! This wall of frames filled with your beautiful family is absolutely wonderful! Thanks for the tip about spacing them! -Marci @ Stone Cottage Adventures
  4. That looks great! I have lots of photos on our walls but am just awful about ever remembering to swap out the actual photos for newer ones. Pinned.
  5. Sometimes it's good to hold on to a new purchase for a bit, let it marinate for a while until you are sure what you are going to do with them. These frames look great in this spot, I especially like how you arrange them landscape and portrait.
