Learn how easy it is to make a DIY metal looking trough. Fill it with tulips or the flowers of your choice for a spring farmhouse decoration. DomesticDeadline.com

In case you’re new to the blog, the purpose of the Pinterest Challenge is to motivate all the participants (and you too) to not just pin, but to make it happen! This month’s challenge is about Spring Crafts/DIY Projects and I’m sharing my DIY Trough of Tulips.

Inspiration

My inspiration came loosely from a few places. I love tulips and had planned on making a tulip wreath but over a year later and my faux tulips were still waiting to be used. Colorful tulips in a large field are what I truly love.

Like this…

So while looking for a new way to use the tulips I already had (on Pinterest, of course) I came across a very pretty tulip arrangement in a metal planter. I almost snagged it and figured I could find some other idea! On sale and much larger than I was originally thinking.

But, I decided I wanted to make instead of buy.

Then I found this cute arrangement and I knew what I wanted to make!

DIY Metal Trough

Starting with a plastic flexible bin, I apply light coats of chalk paint in Elephant using a makeup sponge.

Makeup sponges from the dollar store are always good to have on hand. Dabbing the paint on lightly instead of brushing it on helps when working with some plastics like this.

Three layers of paint in total gave me the metal trough look I was going for. Be sure to let each layer dry completely.

Trough of Tulips

Once my metal trough was ready, I filled it with leftover floral foam. This is another thing I always keep on hand from the dollar store.

Covering the foam with some floral grass turned out not to be necessary, but if I didn’t have so many tulips, it probably would be.

Next, fill in the whole trough with mini tulips.

Because the trough is flexible, I stopped just shy pushing it out of shape.

It’s a bright and springy addition to my mantel!

Now I need to get the rest of the mantel ready for spring!

  1. This is beautiful! I love your trough of tulips and I can't believe that is a plastic bin that you painted. Tulips are spring to me and I'm adding them wherever I can.
  2. Emily, it's beautiful. I totally thought it was a metal container! Nice tip with the makeup sponge. This is a perfect centerpiece for the mantle or a table setting. Love it.
  3. I love this! It's so colorful for spring. I found a white trough at Goodwill recently and I'm filling it with some purple flowers for Gloria's farmhouse style decor. I almost posted it this month for the challenge,
